HC Deb 10 July 1934 vol 292 c172
33. Mr. PARKINSON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many prosecutions have been taken by his Department to secure overdue payments of income tax during 1931, 1932 and 1933, stating the amount recovered in each year?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The only statistics available on this subject are those relating to the number of High Court writs issued for recovery of arrears of tax. In the years ending 31st December, 1931, 1932 and 1933, these numbered 5,705, 5,691 and 5,333 respectively. Information as to the amount recovered in these cases is not available.

34. Mr. PARKINSON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will state the amount of income tax unpaid on 30th June, 1934, which was due to be paid on or before 31st March, 1934?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Owing to the fact that there are always numbers of income tax assessments under appeal or made on a provisional basis, it is impossible to give an accurate estimate of the amount of income tax due on any particular date.
