HC Deb 05 July 1934 vol 291 cc2053-4
21. Mr. GROVES

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he is aware that, although the film "Invisible Man" is not permitted for exhibition to children under 16 years of age, the book is used in the elementary schools; and whether he will state the grounds upon which such permission is granted?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

As regards the first part of the question the use of particular books in public elementary schools is not subject to the permission of the Board of Education. The second part of the question therefore does not arise.

Mr. GROVES

But surely the elementary schools are under the supervision of the Board of Education, and when any such pratice as this is adopted the Board should put it right?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

If His Majesty's Inspector found an unsuitable book in a school, he would report the fact and steps would be taken to secure its withdrawal.

Mr. GROVES

How is it that the British Broadcasting Corporation, or rather the Film Board, decided that this film was not suitable for children, while His Majesty's Inspectors decided that the book was fit for school?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

It cannot be assumed that the film corresponds to the book.
