HC Deb 04 July 1934 vol 291 cc1889-90
12. Mr. KNIGHT

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in the interests of public safety he will make it compulsory for all public vehicles to be equipped throughout with safety glass?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

Since the 1st of January, 1932, the regulations have required, as regards new vehicles, that all glass fitted to windscreens or windows facing to the front on the outside of any motor vehicle, except glass fitted to the upper deck of a double-decked vehicle, shall be safety glass. As at present advised I do not think it necessary to make the use of such glass throughout public service vehicles compulsory.

Mr. KNIGHT

While appreciating the valuable change the hon. Member has indicated, may I ask whether he is aware of the numerous cases recently of accidents in which public vehicles, omnibuses and tramcars, have caused serious injury through broken glass, and will he give further consideration to this matter in order to provide further protection to the travelling public?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I shall be ready to give further consideration to any suggestion.
