§ 58. Mr. T. SMITH (for Mr. T. WILLIAMS)asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount of Customs duties on foodstuffs during each year since 1930; and the estimated yield during the present financial year?
§ Mr. HORE-BELISHAThe approximate amount of Customs duties collected on foodstuffs, including feeding stuffs for animals (which cannot be separately distinguished) during each of the financial years 1930–31 to 1932–33 was as follows:
£ | |||
1930–31 | … | … | 13,949,000 |
1931–32 | … | … | 16,522,000 |
1932–33 | … | … | 27,427,000 |
§ I am unable to furnish an estimate of the yield of these duties during the present financial year.
364§ Sir HERBERT SAMUELMay I ask the hon. Gentleman whether foodstuffs for the purpose of that calculation include such articles as tea and coffee or not?
§ Mr. HORE-BELISHAIt is a rather complicated calculation. It does include tea and coffee, but not all the Excise.
§ Mr. RHYS DAVIESIs it not possible for the Treasury to give us a fairly rough estimate as to the division of the two categories of the foodstuffs mentioned by the hon. Gentleman?
§ Mr. H. WILLIAMSIs it not the case that all this information is published in detail in the Annual Report of the Commissioners of Excise, which can be obtained at the Vote Office?
§ Mr. HORE-BELISHAThat is the case. All the information is accessible, and the figures which I have given include all the articles classified under groups A to F of Class I of the official Import and Export List, but it is given in that statement with more particularity.
