HC Deb 20 February 1934 vol 286 cc161-2
11. Mr. T. SMITH

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he is aware that J. E. Hadley, Castle Gresley, was dismissed from employment at the Granville colliery, Swadlincote, for refusing to work overtime on the conveyor face in the yard seam; whether he will have inquiries made into the circumstances of this case; and what action he proposes to take to safeguard underground workers who object to working illegal overtime?

Mr. E. BROWN

Inquiry has been made into this case, but I can find no justification for the allegation that the man was dismissed for refusing to work illegal overtime. With regard to the last part of the question, the hon. Member is aware of the action, both legal and otherwise, which is taken by my Department in cases where there is good reason to consider that overtime is being worked improperly. Such action is taken, and will continue to be taken irrespective of the views of the parties concerned.
