HC Deb 19 February 1934 vol 286 c16
28. Mr. COCKS

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that persons injured by Post Office vehicles are unable to obtain compensation owing to the fact that the drivers are not insured against third party risks; and whether he will take steps to correct this anomaly?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Sir Kingsley Wood)

As stated in the reply to the hon. Member for Plaistow (Mr. Thorne) on the 14th instant, it is the practice of my Department in the event of an accident to accept the same degree of liability in respect of a claim for civil damages as is imposed on a private employer.

Mr. COCKS

Has not the attention of the right hon. Gentleman been drawn to the accident to one of these persons, who states that she will not receive compensation through being knocked down by one of the vehicles of the right hon. Gentleman?

Sir K. WOOD

Yes, Sir. I looked into that matter personally, and it was not on account of the fact that the Post Office was not insured that the lady in question did not receive any compensation.
