HC Deb 19 February 1934 vol 286 cc1-2
1. Mr. T. SMITH

asked the Secretary of State for India if the chaplains attached to the British Army in India are paid through the Army Department or through the Ecclesiastical Department of the Government of India?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Sir Samuel Hoare)

Chaplains of the Church of India, although the greater number of them minister to British troops, are not attached to the Army, and their pay is chargeable to the Ecclesiastical Department. Some chaplains of the Church of Scotland, and all Roman Catholic and Wesleyan chaplains, are attached to the Army and their pay is chargeable to Army estimates.
