HC Deb 06 February 1934 vol 285 c953
34. Mr. MALLALIEU

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he can supply the names of the countries that have made changes in the import quotas of British goods since October, 1931, and in each case state whether such changes were increases or decreases?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Import restrictions affecting United Kingdom goods to a greater or less extent have been introduced or varied in the following countries during the period in question: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Netherlands, Persia, Poland, Roumania, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. The changes for the most part have involved decreases in imports from the United Kingdom rather than increases.

35. Mr. MALLALIEU

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he can supply the names of the countries that have made changes in their customs duties on British goods since October, 1931, and in each case state whether such changes were increases or decreases?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I would refer the hon. Member to the articles on "Revision of Customs Tariffs" which have appeared in the issues of the Board of Trade Journal for 7th January, 1932, 5th January, 1933, and 11th January, 1934, copies of which I am sending him. It is well known that the prevailing tendency has been towards the increase of Customs duties.
