HC Deb 06 February 1934 vol 285 c977
72. Mr. EMRYS-EVANS

asked the Home Secretary whether the experiments have made it possible to identify the particular chemical which was responsible for the deaths of the workmen employed at the British Celanese Factory at Spondon?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I am advised it can now be stated that the particular chemical in question was di-ethylene di-oxide, otherwise known as dioxen. Investigations are proceeding as to the degree of toxicity of this substance with a view to determining under what conditions, if any, it can safely be used.
