HC Deb 05 February 1934 vol 285 cc799-800
54. Mr. WHITE

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if his attention has been drawn to the heavy losses incurred by the importers of oats and oat products owing to engagements in regard to currency and freight and contracts affected by the Additional Import Duties Order, No. 1 (1934); and what action he proposes to take in the matter?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for SCOTLAND (Mr. Skelton)

My right hon. Friend received a deputation on the subject last Tuesday from associations of importers, representatives of the Board of Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries being present. There is no power under existing legislation to take the action for which the importers ask, and I can hold out no hope of new legislation for this purpose.

Mr. WHITE

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I will raise this matter on the Adjournment of the House.
