asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what increase has taken place in the staff of the Department of Customs, either by additions or transfers from other Departments, since 1st February, 1932; and what has been the additional annual cost?

Mr. COOPER

The increase in the number of staff of the Department of Customs and Excise from all sources, from 1st January, 1932, to 1st October, 1934, the nearest dates for which figures are readily available, was 1,968. The increased cost per annum is estimated at approximately £400,000.
