HC Deb 05 December 1934 vol 295 cc1574-5
26. Captain CUNNINGHAM - REID

asked the Minister of Transport whether he can give any figures of the number of running-down cases in which the insurers of motor vehicles against third-party risks have repudiated their liability on the grounds of breach of conditions or fraud on the part of the policy holder; if such cases are increasing; and whether he contemplates any amendment or strenthening of the compulsory insurances provisions of the Road Traffic Act, 1934?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

My Department is not in a position to ascertain the total number of cases of repudiation of the character to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers, but the number of cases reported by interested parties to my Department has decreased. It would, I think, be premature to ask Parliament to re-open the question until some experience has been gained of the operation of Part II of the Road Traffic Act, 1934, which comes into operation on 1st January next.
