HC Deb 18 April 1934 vol 288 c948
14. Mr. LUNN (for Mr. DAVID GRENFELL)

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of licences for prospecting that have been granted at Kakamega; and whether any other persons than British citizens have been given licences?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

Twelve exclusive prospecting licences have been issued in the Kakamega field, of which 11 are held by British subjects or companies and one by two Belgians. An ordinary prospecting right, as distinguished from an exclusive prospecting licence, is not limited to any particular area. Prospecting in the North Kavirondo native reserve, however, is restricted to the holders of a special permit to enter the reserve. Four hundred and twenty-nine such permits are at present in force, of which 374 are held by British subjects, 32 by foreigners, 22 by Indians, and one by an Arab.

15. Mr. LUNN (for Mr. D. GRENFELL)

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will state the extent to which Kenya native lands have been allocated to prospectors at Kakamega; and whether there are any native prospectors to whom claims have been leased?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The valid mining locations registered in respect of the Kakamega field cover about 65,000 acres; which area is gradually being reduced as the locations are tested. Claims were registered by two natives, but are understood to have been abandoned. No leases have yet been granted to anyone whether native or non-native.
