HC Deb 18 April 1934 vol 288 cc957-8
31. Rear - Admiral Sir MURRAY SUETER

asked the Minister of Transport whether with a view to increased efficiency of road transport on the East Coast, especially in the event of war, and with a view to the provision of employment, he will take steps to have work resumed on the Lower Thames Tunnel, as approved by Parliament?

Mr. STANLEY

I understand the local authorities concerned are not prepared to proceed with this costly scheme at present, and I should not feel able, in existing circumstances, to provide the financial assistance originally contemplated. The necessary steps are, however, being taken to safeguard the line of the tunnel and its approaches.

Mr. LOUIS SMITH

Does not the hon. Gentleman realise that in the national interest it is desirable to improve the transport facilities on the East coast not only with towns South of the Humber but also with the districts across the Humber.
