Mr. STANLEYI understand the local authorities concerned are not prepared to proceed with this costly scheme at present, and I should not feel able, in existing circumstances, to provide the financial assistance originally contemplated. The necessary steps are, however, being taken to safeguard the line of the tunnel and its approaches.
§ Mr. LOUIS SMITHDoes not the hon. Gentleman realise that in the 958 national interest it is desirable to improve the transport facilities on the East coast not only with towns South of the Humber but also with the districts across the Humber.
