HC Deb 18 April 1934 vol 288 cc962-3
38. Mr. G. HALL

asked the President of the Board of Trade the total output of pig-iron and steel in the years 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932 and 1933, respectively, in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Russia, Germany, France and Belgium?

Dr. BURGIN

As the answer contains a table of figures, I will circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

of 1934; and whether, in view of the possibility of a trade agreement being reached with that country, he will give suitable protection to the British straw-board industry?

Dr. BURGIN

I am aware of the facts to which my hon. and gallant Friend draws attention. As regards the second part of the question, I would refer to the reply given on the 28th March to the hon. Member for Jarrow (Mr. Pearson).

Vice-Admiral TAYLOR

As I am afraid I do not know what that reply was, I hope the Minister will take steps to protect the British strawboard industry, which is of the utmost importance to the agricultural interests.

Dr. BURGIN

The reply was that negotiations with the Netherlands were about to begin, and these 'are expected to begin next week.
