HC Deb 10 April 1934 vol 288 cc143-4
11. Dr. HOWITT

asked the President of the Board of Trade if his attention has been called to the fact that between 1931 and 1933 imports of canned salmon from Canada have fallen by 42 per cent. in volume whilst those from the United States of America have increased by 10 per cent.; and whether he will consider taking steps to facilitate the importation of canned salmon from Canada in preference to that from the United States of America?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I am aware of the figures to which my hon. Friend draws attention. The United Kingdom-Canadian Ottawa Agreement provides for the maintenance of a preference on Canadian canned salmon.

Dr. HOWITT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this tendency is still going on this year, and that the United States figures are going up instead of going down?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I shall closely watch the movement of the figures, and shall take what steps are necessary.
