HC Deb 30 November 1933 vol 283 cc1035-6
21. Sir ARTHUR SHIRLEY BENN

asked the Home Secretary if he is aware that a large percentage of boys from training ships such as the "Cornwall" are drafted to the merchant service; and if, as retired officers of the merchant service are debarred from applying for the position of Captain Superintendent of such training ships, he will consider arranging for retired officers of the merchant service who possess the necessary qualifications to compete for these appointments?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The Training Ship "Cornwall" and other nautical schools certified under the Children and Young Persons Act are under the management of voluntary bodies and the selection of the Captain Superintendent is in each case a matter for the managers of the school.
