§ 4. Mr. D. GRENFELLasked the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that 18 Indian families in Peshawar have been informed by the military authorities that they are to yield possession and tenancy of their homes on the ground of public necessity; that these houses have been for more than 80 years in the occupation of these families and are privately owned, and have been in peaceful possession for the full period of the cantonment at Peshawar; whether the rights of the owner-tenants have been examined by him as a result of the representations made to him; and whether he will authorise an inquiry, so that the protests or other representations made by the 18 Indian house-owners may be fully considered?
§ Sir S. HOAREI have no doubt that the Government of India acted within their legal powers and after full consideration of all the circumstances.
§ Mr. GRENFELLIs the right hon. Gentleman satisfied that the matter 536 should be left where it is? Will he give his personal attention to it and report to the House?
§ Sir S. HOAREI am satisfied that no injustice was done and that this was the only action that could be taken in the circumstances. If, however, the hon. Gentleman would like information, I will obtain it for him.
