HC Deb 07 November 1933 vol 281 cc16-7
25. Mr. LUNN

asked the Minister of Labour what was the number of males and females totally or partially unemployed in September, 1931, and at the latest possible date?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Sir Henry Betterton)

The total numbers on the registers were 2,811,615 on 21st September, 1931, and 2,298,753 on 23rd October, 1933. The further details asked for are given in a table which I will circulate, if I may, in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the table:

Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMS

Does the right hon. Gentleman consider that these figures are an advertisement for the virtues of the Coal Mines Act?

Mr. LUNN

Does the right hon. Gentleman also consider it is an advertisement of the success of the National Government?

Sir H. BETTERTON

If the hon. Member for Rothwell (Mr. Lunn) will look at the figures for the last few months, he will see that there has been a great deal of improvement.
