HC Deb 31 May 1933 vol 278 c1859
4. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will state the present position with regard to the dispute between Peru and Colombia; and whether the League of Nations has yet been able to bring about a settlement?

Sir J. SIMON

I am glad to be able to announce that on 25th May an agreement for the settlement of the dispute between Peru and Colombia was signed at Geneva by the delegates of those two countries. This agreement is based on a formula adopted by the Advisory Committee of the League on 10th May. It provides for the immediate cessation of hostilities, and for the despatch to Leticia within the next 30 days of a commission nominated by the Council. This commission will, in the name of Colombia, take over the administration of the territory evacuated by the Peruvian forces, and will carry on its task for a period not exceeding one year, during which negotiations will take place between the parties for a final settlement of the dispute.
