HC Deb 22 May 1933 vol 278 cc763-4
42. Mr. HICKS (for Mr. THORNE)

asked the Home Secretary whether the State breweries at Carlisle are brewing light ale for sale at 4d. per pint; and, if so, if he can state the gravity of the beer?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The gravity of all beers sold by the State management was increased by two degrees and the price reduced by a 1d. immediately after the revision of the Beer Duties. Consequently the beer formerly sold at 6d. is now two degrees higher in gravity and is sold at 5d. It is thought there may be a demand for a cheaper beer of lower gravity, and the experiment is to be tried of putting on sale a mild ale at 4d.

43. Mr. HICKS (for Mr. THORNE)

asked the Home Secretary when the accounts of the State breweries at

Carlisle for the last financial year will be issued?

Sir J. GILMOUR

It is anticipated that as in previous years the statutory annual report on the State management districts, with a statement of accounts appended, will be issued early in the autumn.
