HC Deb 17 May 1933 vol 278 c346
20. Mr. LOVAT-FRASER

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that at least 250,000 users of motor vehicles in England are incapable of knowing green light controls from red; and if he proposes to take any steps to deal with the resulting danger?

Mr. STANLEY

I do not know from what source my hon. Friend has obtained his estimate of the number of drivers of motor vehicles who are partially colour-blind, but it would appear to be very exaggerated. I understand that the Departmental Committee on Traffic Signs heard evidence on this subject, and I will consider the matter in the light of their report which I hope to receive shortly.

Mr. LOVAT-FRASER

If the hon. Gentleman would like to know, the source of my information is a very interesting and remarkable article in the "Nineteenth Century Magazine." [HON. MEMBERS: "Order!"] If I was technically inaccurate in putting it as I did, I would ask the hon. Gentleman if he has not seen—and as Minister of Transport he ought to have seen it—the remarkable article in the "Nineteenth Century" by Sir Mervyn O'Gorman?

Sir BASIL PET0

Has the Minister any reason to believe that there are a quarter of a million motorists who cannot read the "stop" and "go" signals?
