HC Deb 15 May 1933 vol 278 c26
35. Mr. TOM SMITH

asked the Minister of Labour how many applications for unemployment insurance benefit have been turned down by the umpire on the ground that the unemployment was due to a trade dispute in the mining industry from July, 1932, to the present time?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Hudson)

Between July, 1932, and 12th May, 1933, the umpire gave 56 decisions disallowing claims from applicants in the coal mining industry on the ground that the trade dispute disqualification applied. Some of these were test cases and the number of individuals affected cannot be given.

Mr. SMITH

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether the so-called trade disputes were due to the employers trying to reduce wages?
