HC Deb 10 May 1933 vol 277 cc1512-3
17. Lord APSLEY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the percentage of lemons imported into this country from British Colonies, and if he will take steps designed to ensure that the British Colonies growing this product shall supply all our requirements?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The total import of lemons into the United Kingdom from British countries is under 1 per cent. of the whole. Not all these come from the Colonial Empire. The only Colony which exports lemons is Cyprus, from which the value of exports in 1931 was £1,923, of which £1,011 was to the United Kingdom, as against £1,256,052, the value of total imports of lemons into the United Kingdom in the same year. I hope that with the assistance of the 10 per cent. preference given by the Import Duties Act this trade will increase but it is quite impossible at present to grow enough lemons in the Colonial Empire to meet the requirements of the United Kingdom market.

Mr. HERBERT WILLIAMS

Do any of the Mandated Territories send lemons?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I think that I should like notice of that question. I am not sure. I rather think that no Mandated Territories send lemons, but a number of Colonial Territories send limes.
