HC Deb 03 May 1933 vol 277 cc826-7
8. Mr. HALL-CAINE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of impoverished Europeans who are being supported by the European Unemployment Fund in Malaya; and whether, in view of the lack of funds to carry on this work, the Government are taking any further action to repatriate those men affected who cannot be locally supported?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The European Unemployment Fund in Malaya is at present supporting 124 persons with 126 dependents, a total of 250 persons. Eight persons are being repatriated, and it is anticipated that some six more are likely to require repatriation in the near future. In cases where repatriation is recommended by the committee of the fund, the cost is borne by the Straits Settlements and the Federated Malay States Governments. I am informed that the present income of the fund from public subscription it sufficient for local relief without assistance from the Government.
