HC Deb 03 May 1933 vol 277 c823
6. Captain PETER MACDONALD

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, if he can now make any further statement with regard to the action of the Ceylon Government in the matter of Imperial Preference?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister)

No further action has been taken by the Ceylon State Council in regard to Imperial Preference.

Captain MACDONALD

Has the Ceylon Government indicated its attitude towards Imperial Preference?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I made a pretty full statement just before I went away as to how far the Ceylon Government had granted preference. No further action, I regret to say, has been taken.

Captain MACDONALD

What action does the right hon. Gentleman intend to take to see that the recommendations of the Ottawa Conference are carried out?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I think I also made it plain that I regarded it as a perfectly reasonable proposition that a country that receives preference should give an adequate preference in return.

Captain MACDONALD

Failing that, what action does the right hon. Gentleman intend to take?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

That is a question that must be addressed to the President of the Board of Trade.
