HC Deb 01 May 1933 vol 277 c504
33. Mr. RANKIN

asked the Attorney-General whether, in view of the large number of magistrates whose age prevents them from rendering effective service, he will recommend the desirability of examining the personnel of magisterial benches generally in the country with the object of ensuring that the public interest is in all cases met by the appointment of a sufficient number of active magistrates who live in the districts concerned?

The SOLICITOR-GENERAL (Sir Boyd Merriman)

It is the duty of the advisory committees appointed by the Lord Chancellor to review the magisterial benches in their districts and to make recommendations for the appointment of a sufficient number of magistrates who are capable of rendering effective service, but the Lord Chancellor is always prepared to consider any particular case brought to his notice in which it is suggested that there is an insufficient number of active magistrates.
