HC Deb 30 March 1933 vol 276 cc1159-60
29. Mr. CAMPBELL

asked the Home Secretary whether he can make any statement regarding the purchase for the Metropolitan police of the Army Sports Ground at Leyton, in the north-east district of London?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I have been anxious for some considerable time to secure better recreational facilities for the police of the Metropolis. Owing to the urgent need for economy it has not been found possible to provide public funds for this purpose at the present time, but I am happy to say that, for the time being, through the good offices of the Commissioner of Police and some of his friends, the provision of funds from private sources has made it possible to purchase from the Army Sport Control Board, as from 30th September, the Army Sports Ground at Leyton. This ground is situate in No. 3 District, and we hope it will be of great use. I would like to take this opportunity of publicly thanking those whose generosity has enabled the Commissioner to provide this ground.
