HC Deb 30 March 1933 vol 276 c1167
44. Mr. LUNN

asked the Minister of Health if he will state the cost for poor law relief in the year 1932 and the last figure available for 1933?

Information as to the cost of institutional poor relief in these periods is not yet available. The expenditure on out-relief in England and Wales in 1932 was £14,802,353. The corresponding figure for the eight weeks ended 25th February, 1933, was £2,594,406.

Does not the increase in the figures show the necessity for the Government taking over the maintenance of the able-bodied unemployed, instead of leaving them to the care of the local authorities?
