Sir H. YOUNGInformation as to the cost of institutional poor relief in these periods is not yet available. The expenditure on out-relief in England and Wales in 1932 was £14,802,353. The corresponding figure for the eight weeks ended 25th February, 1933, was £2,594,406.
§ Mr. LUNNDoes not the increase in the figures show the necessity for the Government taking over the maintenance of the able-bodied unemployed, instead of leaving them to the care of the local authorities?
