HC Deb 29 March 1933 vol 276 cc984-5
7. Captain P. MACDONALD

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can make any statement as to the progress which it is hoped to make during 1933 in connection with the abolition of locust plagues from the East African dependencies?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister)

Experiments are being conducted in this country into the possibilities of locust control by means of subjecting the flying swarms to a cloud of poisonous material discharged from an aeroplane. An account of the experimental programme will be found in the Fifth Report, which I understand will shortly be published, of the Committee on Locust Control of the Economic Advisory Council. The programme is being carried out under the auspices of that Committee, by means of a grant from the Colonial Development Fund, and with the co-operation of the Government of Kenya. It is too early to predict whether the progress of the experiments will be such as to permit of practical measures in East Africa during 1933.
