HC Deb 23 March 1933 vol 276 cc473-4
9. Captain PETER MACDONALD

asked the Minister of Labour if he can now state if it is intended to introduce legislation based on the final report of the Royal Commission on Unemployment Insurance during the current Session of Parliament?

24. Mr. GRAHAM WHITE

asked the Minister of Labour when it is proposed to introduce an Unemployment Insurance Bill; and if this will be based on the report of the Royal Commission on Unemployment Insurance?

Sir H. BETTERTON

I would refer to the reply given on 14th March by the Lord President of the Council to the hon. Member for Durham, East (Mr. McKeag).

Mr. BATEY

Has the Minister no more to say as to when we may expect legislation to be introduced?

Sir H. BETTERTON

No, Sir. That question was put to the Lord President, and I give the same answer, namely, that this legislation is necessarily of a very complex character, and requires very careful consideration in every aspect.

Mr. BATEY

Does the same answer apply to transitional payments?

Sir H. BETTERTON

It is obvious that there must be legislation before the end of June, because the existing Act comes to an end.
