HC Deb 23 March 1933 vol 276 cc489-90
50. Major LEIGHTON

asked the Minister of Health whether the post of local registrar of births, deaths and marriages, when vacant, is advertised; and, if not, what method is adopted to obtain applications?

Sir H. YOUNG

The duty of making appointments to these posts devolves in the first instance upon the county or county borough council concerned. I believe that it is ordinarily the practice of councils to invite applications by advertisement.

Major LEIGHTON

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether it has been the usual custom since the War to enable ex-service men to be given these appointments?

Sir H. YOUNG

I certainly cannot say that there has been any general rule to that effect, but I have no doubt that such qualifications will always be considered.
