HC Deb 23 March 1933 vol 276 cc496-7
64. Mr. McGOVERN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is now in a position to state the composition of the judicial committee to inquire into the graft allegations regarding the Glasgow Corporation; the terms of reference to the committee; and the source from which the costs of the inquiry will be defrayed?

The SECRETARY of STATE for SCOTLAND (Sir Godfrey Collins)

I am not yet in a position to make any statement on the first two parts of the question. As regards the last part the expenses of the inquiry will be met by the Corporation of Glasgow.

Mr. McGOVERN

As the atmosphere created by these arrests and the late trial is not conducive to good civic government, will the right hon. Gentleman speed up the decision to hold the inquiry and to appoint the people who are to be responsible for it, and can he give any date when he will be able to make a definite statement?

Sir G. COLLINS

I can assure my hon. Friend that the matter is receiving my constant and daily attention. I can assure him that there is no avoidable delay taking place, but I cannot yet say when the tribunal will be set up.
