§ 53. Mr. HUTCHISONasked the Minister of Health whether local authorities are required to keep gas masks to be worn by employés descending into sewers where there is reasonable ground to expect the presence of gas; and, if not, whether he will suggest to all of them that these gas masks should be provided and used?
Sir H. YOUNGThe answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. I am advised that, gas masks would not be effective in all cases of danger and that it is the practice to make tests before men descend into sewers. Having regard to the fatality recently reported in the Press, I propose to make further inquiry into the matter.
§ Mr. T. WILLIAMSWill the right hon. Gentleman state what kind of test is made, and whether it is by an automatic gas detector or some other implement?
Sir H. YOUNGPerhaps the hon. Member will give me notice of that question in order that I may deal with it in a satisfactory manner.
§ Mr. MANDERWill the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind that the whole population of London will before long be requiring gas masks if the Disarmament Conference breaks down?
§ Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLEWill the right hon. Gentleman take steps to supply hon. Members with gas masks to protect them against the hon. Gentleman?
