HC Deb 16 March 1933 vol 275 c2136
86. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any information has been received in regard to the modification by the Manchukuo Government of the tariff in favour of Japanese oranges and apples in December last, contrary to international treaties; and what action he proposes to take?

Mr. BALDWIN

No, Sir. In November last the Manchukuo authorities announced that the specific duties hitherto levied on imported oranges and apples had been replaced by ad valorem duties of 15 per cent. and 25 per cent. respectively; but I have no information of discriminatory action on their part in favour of the Japanese fruit.

Mr. MANDER

Will the right hon. Gentleman be good enough to make inquiries in view of the danger that this may be applied to the textile exports from this country?

Mr. BALDWIN

I am advised that there is no discrimination.
