HC Deb 16 March 1933 vol 275 c2133
60. Sir WLLLIAM DAVISON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that five packages containing examples of modern Chinese art, which wore loaned for exhibition at the White-chapel Art Gallery by Professor Chytil, of Prague, have been stopped by the Customs authorities, who claim duty amounting to £450; and whether, as these works of art are not for sale, but merely for exhibition at the gallery, which opens its exhibitions free to the public, steps will be taken to release them for exhibition without payment of duty?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am having inquiry made into the matter, and I will let my hon. Friend know the result as soon as possible.
