HC Deb 14 March 1933 vol 275 cc1776-7
32. Mr. L. SMITH

asked the Minister of Transport the policy of the Government in relation to the final report of the Severn Barrage Committee?

Mr. STANLEY

The report of this committee, which gives the result of a long and intricate inquiry, is at present under consideration by His Majesty's Government. Before coming to any decision the Government naturally desire an opportunity of learning the views of local authorities and other interests concerned.

Mr. SMITH

Before the hon. Gentleman spends any valuable time in considering this doubtful scheme, will he give consideration to other more useful schemes, in which no financial assistance is required and by which employment can be found, such as the Humber Bridge scheme?

Mr. STANLEY

I cannot specify any particular scheme, but clearly this scheme will have to be considered in conjunction with other schemes for Government assistance.
