HC Deb 13 March 1933 vol 275 c1589
5. Mr. M. JONES (for Mr. RHYS DAVIES)

asked the Secretary of State for India whether, in view of the imposition by the Government of Afghanistan of an embargo on foreign-made matches and soap, it is the intention of the Government of India to negotiate a trade treaty between India and Afghanistan?

Sir S. HOARE

So far as I know, the Government of India have no present intention of proposing fresh negotiations with a view to supplementing the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of 1921 and the Anglo-Afghan Trade Convention of 1923 (Treaty Series No. 19 (1922) and No. 21 (1923), respectively).

Mr. JONES

Have any representations been made to the right hon. Gentleman by the Government of India, as to the deleterious effect on the cotton trade in India of the absence of a trade agreement?

Sir S. HOARE

No, Sir. There is the Trade Convention of 1923.
