HC Deb 02 June 1933 vol 278 c2237
1. Mr. SUTCLIFFE

asked the Postmaster-General what has been the revenue of the Post Office from the advertisements of patent medicines in books of stamps issued by the Post Office during each of the past three years; whether it is proposed to continue such advertisements; and, if not, on what grounds?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Sir Kingsley Wood)

The revenue from advertisements of patent medicines in the stamp bocks is about £530 per annum, of which about £30 per annum is from advertisements of medicines for certain diseases referred to in paragraph 58 (2) of the Report of the Select Committee on Patent Medicines. In view of the Committee's recommendations, I have decided that any future contract for the exploitation of advertisement space in the stamp books shall prohibit acceptance by the contractor of any advertisement for a patent medicine, the terms of which suggest that the medicine has a beneficial effect in respect of the diseases listed.
