HC Deb 25 July 1933 vol 280 cc2409-10
57. Sir BERTRAM FALLE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Argentine national and provincial Governments have yet discharged the overdue debts owing to the railways operated in Argentina with British capital in accord with the arrangements arrived at during the Anglo-Argentine trade agreement discussions?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

The amounts falling due, from time to time, to the British railway companies from the Argentine National and Provincial Governments are by way of current account for freights and charges, and are discharged, also from time to time, in the normal way. I understand that substantial collections in cash, bills and bonds have been effected in certain cases in recent months from the National Government. There is no direct connection between this matter and the terms of the Anglo-Argentine Convention and Protocol of the 1st May last, except in so far as an improvement in the general position of the railways may be expected to follow the conclusion of that agreement.
