HC Deb 24 July 1933 vol 280 cc2218-9
26. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he is in a position to state the number of cattle which have been landed at ports in Great Britain and which were shipped from ports in Northern Ireland during the month of June this year and last year?

Major ELLIOT

Separate particulars of the number of cattle landed at ports in Great Britain from Northern Ireland are not compiled, but the total number of cattle exported from Ireland to Great Britain and the Isle of Man and embarked at ports in Northern Ireland in June, 1932, was 17,372 and in June, 1933, 19,317.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Does my right hon. and gallant Friend take the view that this indicates that there was no serious smuggling of cattle from the Irish Free State through Northern Ireland for shipment to this country?

Major ELLIOT

I prefer not to dogmatise about that, as it concerns another department.

Lieut.-Colonel SANDEMAN ALLEN

Is there any increase in dead meat as well as live meat imports?
