HC Deb 18 July 1933 vol 280 cc1670-1
34. Mr. TOM SMITH

asked the Secretary for Mines if he can give an estimate of the additional number of coal miners who will be employed as a result of the Trade Agreements with Norway and Sweden, respectively?

Mr. E. BROWN

It is estimated that the increased tonnages provided for by the Trade Agreements with Norway and Sweden over the quantities exported in 1931 represent the annual output of 2,120 and 4,180 coal miners, respectively.

Mr. LAWSON

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the more trade agreements we make the more pits are stopped working?

Mr. BROWN

I do not accept that at all. If the hon. Gentleman will study the Scandinavian figures, he will find that trade is going up.

Lieut.-Colonel ACLAND-TROYTE

How many miners have been put out of work owing to the damage done to the papermaking industry by these agreements?
