HC Deb 13 July 1933 vol 280 cc1238-9
30. Mr. LAWSON

asked the Minister of Health the total number of people receiving relief at the end of June?

Sir H. YOUNG

The total number of persons (men, women and children) in receipt of poor relief in England and Wales (excluding rate-aided patients in mental hospitals, persons in receipt of domiciliary medical relief only and casuals) on Saturday, the 24th June, 1933, was 1,272,058.

Mr. BATEY

Has the Minister got with him the figures of the number of those who are able-bodied?

Sir H. YOUNG

I am afraid I should want notice of that question.

31. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Health the nature of the reply received from the West Riding (Yorks) public assistance committee to his recent letters regarding their scale of relief?

Sir H. YOUNG

I understand that the public assistance committee are submitting certain resolutions for consideration at the next meeting of the county council.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Do we understand that the right hon. Gentleman has received no reply to the recent correspondence, and that he is simply waiting for the next county council meeting?

Sir H. YOUNG

I do not think that deduction would be justified; obviously, I must wait for the developments in this connection.
