HC Deb 11 July 1933 vol 280 cc917-8
19. Mr. LUNN

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs if he is now in a position to make a statement regarding the action to be taken by the Government in the United Kingdom on the Report of the Royal Commission on Migrant Land Settlement in Victoria, Australia?

Mr. J. H. THOMAS

As I informed my hon. Friend on 4th July, I am pressing the matter as hard as I can, and I understand that it is likely that consultations will take place between the Commonwealth and Victoria Governments on the subject in the very near future.

Mr. LUNN

Is it a fact that the Premier of Victoria is deliberately and persistently delaying a decision by his Government on this matter; and, in view of the fact that there is to be a Debate in the House of Commons upon it within a fortnight, will the right hon. Gentleman press for a decision, seeing that the matter is causing so much distress among hundreds of people?

Mr. THOMAS

I have never hesitated to say in the House that I deplore this delay. I do not see the justification for it, and I am pressing to have the matter dealt with.

Mr. MAXTON

Apart from the mind of the Prime Minister of Victoria, has the right hon. Gentleman made up his mind about the responsibilities of himself and his own Government on the matter?

Mr. THOMAS

I have made up my mind that these migrants are entitled to consideration, and I am bringing home to those whom I believe to be responsible their responsibilities. I could not be expected to do more than that at the moment.
