HC Deb 11 July 1933 vol 280 cc903-4
4. Sir A. M. SAMUEL

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been drawn to the difficulties experienced by British exporters of ready-made clothing to the French markets; whether he is aware that the British quota for these goods on 1st July was zero and that goods in transit on that date and specifically ordered by customers in France may have to be returned to England; and whether he will have the French quota and quota periods re-examined for the purpose of remedy- ing the difficulties experienced by British exporters of ready-made clothing?

Lieut.-Colonel JOHN COLVILLE (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

I am aware of the difficulties to which my hon. Friend refers. The Board of Trade are in consultation with the wholesale clothing manufacturers with regard to the best steps to be taken to improve the position.

Sir A. M. SAMUEL

Will the Minister see representatives of the trade and discuss the matter with them?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

If the representatives will put their case forward, I will see what can be done.
