§ 34. Mr. POTTERasked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the divergence in the practice of licensing benches of magistrates in the granting of extensions to licensees for the sale and consumption of spirituous liquor during summer time, and of the uncertainty of the law with regard to the powers of licensing authorities in respect thereof, 749 he will introduce legislation with the object of bringing about uniformity in the application of the law in such matters?
§ Mr. HACKINGMy right hon. Friend is aware that there is some divergence of opinion as to the powers of licensing benches in regard to this matter, but, as he has stated in reply to previous questions, he can hold out no prospect of any licensing legislation being introduced in the near future.
§ Mr. HANNONIs it not a fact that this divergence in the administration of the licensing law is becoming more or less a public scandal; and is it not time that the Home Office took some steps to introduce uniformity?
§ Mr. HACKINGIn regard to this particular question, there is a case pending at the present time.
§ Lieut.-Colonel APPLINIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that in my constituency there is a bar at which people can obtain drink until ten o'clock at one end and until half-past ten at the other end?
§ Mr. HACKINGPerhaps the hon. and gallant Gentleman will see me afterwards.
