HC Deb 10 July 1933 vol 280 cc740-1
16. Captain PETER MACDONALD

asked the Minister of Agriculture how the average prices of fat cattle in Great Britain during June compare with similar prices during June, 1932?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Major Elliot)

As the answer contains a table of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

sents not only loss to the producers, but eventual injury to the consumers also. The policy of the Government is directed to securing a higher level of wholesale prices, and in the case of meat the Government is actively engaged in promoting this by securing a better relation between supply and demand.

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

As the duty on Irish cattle has reduced the imports more than the quantitative restrictions have reduced the imports on dead meat, would it not be desirable to have a duty on dead meat?

Major ELLIOT

If the figures and statements of my hon. Friend were correct, that would be so. But they are not. correct..

Mr. WILLIAMS

Would the right hon. and gallant Gentleman state in what directions I am incorrect, having regard to the figures recently published?
