HC Deb 06 July 1933 vol 280 c493
27. M. MACQUISTEN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has considered the possibility of Great Britain and France offering to liquidate their debts to the United States by the delivery to them of commodities which the latter do not themselves produce but which are in great demand in the United States?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

At the proper time my right hon. Friend will bear in mind all the relevant possibilities, and he has taken note of my hon. Friend's suggestion.

Mr. MACQUISTEN

Is it not notorious that there is in France immense stocks of wine and that there is in Scotland immense stocks of whisky which the United States want, and might we not in that way liquidate a lot of our debt?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I now understand what the hon. and learned Member means by the expression "liquidating debt."
