Lieut.-Colonel J. COLVILLE (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

The embargo was in force from 26th April to 1st July, and during that period licences were issued for the importation of goods from the Soviet Union to the value of approximately £194,000.

Mr. PIKE

Can the bon. and gallant Member say the total amount of revenue from licence duty collected in that respect?

43. Sir A. KNOX

asked the President of the Board of Trade the total value in sterling of the imports from the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, of domestic exports, and of re-exports, respectively, to the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, and of the trade balance unfavourable to Great Britain from the year 1922 to the imposition of the embargo in April, 1933?

Dr. BURGIN

During the period January, 1922, to March, 1933, the aggregate declared value of merchandise imported into this country and consigned from the Soviet Union was £244,600,000, while the domestic exports and re- exports of merchandise consigned from this country to the Soviet Union amounted to £57,700,000 and £49,300,000, respectively. The excess of imports over exports of merchandise was thus £137,600,000.
