HC Deb 05 July 1933 vol 280 c316
6. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will state the present position of the question of a League of Nations convention giving equal rights to men and women throughout the territories subject to the respective jurisdictions of members of the League; and whether the Government intends to interest itself in this matter through the League or to introduce legislation on the subject in this country?

Sir J. SIMON

I have made inquiries and find that this question does not figure on the agenda for the next session of the Assembly. The second part of the question is, therefore, premature.

Mr. MANDER

Do we understand that the right hon. Gentleman accepts the principle of equal rights for men and women?

Sir J. SIMON

In my opinion, the phrase "equal rights for men and women" is an admirable one, but one can accept the principle without being able to apply it in every circumstance.
